The Half-Assed But Kinda Working Things I’m Doing for Air Pollution Lung Health
I’m not perfect at this. My place still smells like yesterday’s pizza sometimes and I definitely still crack windows when it’s 85 degrees because AC costs money. But here’s what’s actually moved the needle even a little:
- Finally bought a legit air purifier (Coway one, not the $40 no-name that sounded like a jet engine). Run it nonstop in the bedroom when AQI > 50. Sleep is better, less 4 a.m. coughing marathons.
- AirNow app is now my most-used app. I check it like I check texts. Bad forecast? I cancel outdoor plans. No shame.
- N95 masks in the car, the backpack, the jacket pocket. Wear one when walking the dog on orange or red days. People give looks but my lungs thank me.
- Stopped with the Febreze plugins and those smelly candles—turns out they make indoor air worse. Who knew.
- Trying to vacuum more often with the HEPA filter attachment. Still hate vacuuming though.
Stuff I Tried That Was Dumb (But I Still Do Some of It)
Thought houseplants would save me. Bought like eight. They died slowly while I was busy ignoring them. One is still hanging on barely. Also tried running on “lightly unhealthy” days thinking “it’s not that bad.” Ended up with chest soreness for three days straight. Dumb move. Don’t do that.
Essential oils in a diffuser? Big nope. Made me cough harder. Lesson expensive and wheezy.

It’s not like I’m gonna single-handedly fix the planet. Climate’s doing its thing, more wildfires every year, more cars, more construction. But I can at least stop making it worse for my own dumb lungs.
